Hybrid Inverters – From Battery to Solar

If you are looking for a long-term modular approach towards energy security, plus savings, for a house, office or holiday cottage, then starting with a battery backup system that is fully expandable to solar PV may be the smart way to go. Being on the approved list of the CoCT and other municipalities will be an important consideration when choosing the equipment.

One of AWPower’s favourite choices are the Victron Multiplus-II 3kVA and 5kVA hybrid inverters because of its almost limitless expansion capability as it can be paralleled, i.e. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12kVA and more. Up to 54kVA output can be achieved with the 3kVA hybrid with approval by CoCT or CityPower, making it possible to support an example load of up to 720 PC laptops @ 60W each. You can start with 4.8kWh AGM/Gel or lithium batteries which can also be expanded as required.

When your budget allows, solar PV modules may be added without having to replace any components. A major benefit in opting for a hybrid inverter is the ability to switch between battery and/or the grid as a source, and to supplement energy from solar PV, without requiring any intervention from the user. During load shedding your essentials will continue to run off battery/solar.
Internet access to the system will provide performance statistics and allow for remote support.
