In South Africa, Eskom tariff increases are practically an annual certainty, with recent hikes ranging from 12% to over 18%. In an article published by MyBroadband, South Africa’s average electricity tariff was roughly R3.71 per kWh in December 2024. At that time, R3.71 converted to about $0.211.
At that rate, South Africa’s tariffs were already 31.91% higher than the world’s average of $0.16 and 66.52% higher than the average tariff across Africa.
For businesses trying to manage cash flow and forecast growth, it’s an unpredictable and often painful line item. Enter solar power, not just as a backup during power outages, but as a strategy to fix your energy costs and protect your margins.
The Real Maths Behind Solar ROI
Let’s start with something most business owners understand: cost predictability.
If your company spends R20 000 a month on electricity today, what does that look like five years from now if Eskom continues with double-digit hikes? A conservative 12% annual increase turns R20 000 into roughly R35 000 a month by 2030.
Now compare that to a solar PV system with a fixed loan repayment. Financing options, such as those from Nedbank or ooba, allow you to pay a predictable monthly fee while immediately reducing your grid usage. And unlike your Eskom bill, your solar system doesn’t hike prices each year.
Solar That Pays for Itself
Now, let’s look at one of our recent commercial projects: a solar installation for a multi-unit apartment block in Cape Town. After switching to solar, their monthly grid draw dropped by 69% from November 2024 to June 2025, a saving of approximately R97 855 to date.
If this installation were financed, the client would come out ahead from month one. And once a loan is paid off, those savings grow exponentially.
Better yet, they’re now more resilient to winter peaks, tariff changes, and daylight variability thanks to a smart system design.
Tax Perks: Section 12B and You
If you think the benefits stop at energy savings, think again. Section 12B of the Income Tax Act allows businesses to write off the full cost of a solar installation in the first year. That means if you invest R1 million in solar, you can deduct the full amount from your taxable income in the first year.
For profitable businesses, that accelerates your payback timeline significantly. It’s essentially SARS helping you fund your shift to sustainable energy.
Oversize Now, Optimise Later
One of the smartest plays we see for commercial clients is strategic oversizing. Why?
Solar generation is highest in summer, but generation from solar is lower in winter. By oversizing your solar array upfront and opting for exporting excess generated power to the grid, you’ll build a cushion of profitable excess generation that reduces your winter grid reliance.
Pair this with smart load-shifting (like running high-consumption processes during daylight hours), and you’re in a powerful position. Read our article on exporting to the grid.
Finance Options Made Easy
AWPower has partnered with Nedbank and ooba to make solar adoption seamless. Our financing partners understand SME needs and offer terms designed to align solar savings with repayments, meaning many clients see net positive cash flow from month one.
And because AWPower systems are engineered by qualified engineers, we make sure every kilowatt you generate works hard for your business.
Your Businesses’ Future Should Be Fixed
We live in a world where almost everything – from fuel to food – is getting more expensive, fixing your energy cost is a strategic business decision. Solar isn’t just a green initiative; it’s a financial buffer, a growth enabler, and a hedge against uncertainty.
If you’re ready to take control of your energy spend, let’s start with a no-obligation consultation.
